What is Chipping?

The microchip in your car’s ECU (electronic control unit) contains a lookup table that informs the engine how to respond under specific conditions. For example, if you’re driving down the highway at one hundred kilometres per hour and you suddenly accelerate, the computer will detect this and request information from the chip on how it should react or respond. The chip refers to the lookup table and instructs the computer how much petrol to send to the engine.

On a factory chip, the manufacturer dictates all possible parameters. For example: how and when an automatic vehicle must shift the car into a lower gear, how to adjust the timing and, if the car has a turbocharger, how much turbo boost to provide.

When you decide to install a performance chip, the lookup table parameters are adjusted to ensure the vehicle yields the best performance in terms of fuel economy, emissions and other constraints that usually impede performance.

ECU Programming & Remapping/Tuning

Engine control units are a recent addition to vehicles, having first appeared in the late 1970s. Carmakers must adhere to global performance criteria, for example, fuel injection. These factory settings can sometimes diminish a car’s performance, and some engines only perform at 60 to 70% of their actual capacity.

The ECU in modern vehicles, combined with innovative engine technology, makes it possible to control many aspects of a car’s performance, such as spark timing and fuel injection. The ECU may also control electronic throttle control (drive-by-wire), poppet valve timing, boost control (in turbocharged engines), anti-lock braking systems, the automatic transmission, speed governor (if installed), and the Electronic Stability Control system. Manufacturers design for a specific timing and this may limit performance.

However, we can easily and safely change this by adjusting the data stored on the chip.

The term chip tuning can be misleading as people often use it to describe ECU tuning, which does not involve swapping the chip. Modern ECUs can be tuned by simply updating the software interface through a standard interface such as On-Board Diagnostics. This procedure is commonly referred to as Engine Control Unit (ECU) Tuning.

If there are engine, intake, or exhaust modifications to your car, these ‘plug-and-play’ adaptations alter the flow of the engine, often causing a change in the air to fuel ratio. Without re-mapping the fuel tables, some of the performance gains may not be achieved.
